You're Invited: Three Minute Thesis 2024

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition challenges Caltech graduate students to explain their research in an engaging and clear three-minute talk for the chance to win $3000. Given Caltech’s prominence in science and engineering communities, we feel it's important to give Caltech graduate students the opportunity to practice communicating their science in ways that will resonate and inspire. There will be four prizes awarded:

$3,000 for first place
$2,000 for second place
$1,000 for third place
$500 for the audience favorite as chosen by attendees

Join us to crown the winner on April 18, 2024 at 5:00 pm in the Chen 100 Lecture Hall or via livestream. Learn more.

CCDC User Webinar: Drug Design Inspiration from Torsional Data Mining
Wed, Apr 24, 2024 7:00 AM - 8:00 AM PDT

In this webinar Gilles Ouvry of NRG Therapeutics will share how the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) can be a source of inspiration for drug design. The majority of the focus will be around mining torsional information from the CSD on common functional groups and highlighting how it has been used in a range of drug discovery projects, creating cheat sheets for medicinal chemists using Conquest and Mercury. Other minable CSD data points will be explored, including using IsoStar to mine intermolecular interactions. Register!

Outdoor Movie Night: Canary

During Earth Week, we will be screening Canary, an inspiring documentary about climate scientist, Dr. Lonnie Thompson. Dr. Thompson is committed to finding the most impossible-to-reach glaciers by drilling for ice cores that can tell us how the climate is changing. His entire mission in life is to document and recover these ice core records before they are gone forever. Join us in the Sherman Fairchild Amphitheater on Tuesday, April 23 at 7:30 pm. Bring a blanket and we'll provide the snacks.

Celebrating Our Three Minute Thesis Sponsors: Diamond Level

Leading up to our Three Minute Thesis (3MT) event on April 18 at the Chen Lecture Hall and broadcast via livestream, we want to take a moment to thank our most generous sponsors that make this competition possible. EBSCO Information Services, Elsevier, and Thieme have donated at the Diamond level to support the prizes for our winners. We're grateful for their support.

Celebrating Our Three Minute Thesis Sponsors: Gold Level

Leading up to our Three Minute Thesis (3MT) event on April 18 at the Chen Lecture Hall and broadcast via livestream, we want to take a moment to thank our generous sponsors that make this competition possible. Institute of Physics (IOP) and Royal Society of Chemistry have donated at the Gold level to support the prizes for our winners. We're grateful for their support.

GeoRef Trial

The Library has a two-month trial through May 31 to GeoRef via Elsevier’s Engineering
Village platform. GeoRef is a database established by the American Geoscienes
Institute (AGI) and contains over four million references to geoscience journal articles,
books, maps, conference papers, reports, and theses. The database covers the
geology of North America from 1666 to the present, and world coverage from 1933 to
the present. Currently, the Library has access to GeoRef via EBSCO’s platform.

Copyright Tip - Theses

Theses must be submitted in electronic form as part of the graduation requirements for Caltech. Have you wondered what kind of copyright issues you should consider before depositing your thesis? Our Guide to CaltechTHESIS will answer your questions, such as:
Who owns the copyright to my thesis? Should I register for copyright? How does copyright protection work? What are my legal rights and responsibilities?

Contact us at library@caltech.edu if you have any copyright questions.

Access Neurology

The Library now subscribes to McGraw Hill's Access Neurology, which contains a number of foundational texts in neuroscience, such as Kandel's "Principles of Neural Science," as well as a range of multimedia and other resources for learning about neurology. You can access this resource at the Access Neurology website or via proxied link from off-campus.

Hot Tip: Select "Caltech Library"

On many publisher websites, you’ll see the option to log in to your institution via OpenAthens and access resources that the library has licensed. Make sure that you select “Caltech Library” from the list of institutions, not “California Institute of Technology.” If you pick “California Institute of Technology” from the list, you’ll get an error message. More information is available in this Library FAQ.

Deep Learning Workshop Series

This spring, Caltech Library is offering an introductory sequence of workshops on Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Natural Language Processing. These workshops are designed for researchers in all areas with an interest in machine learning and language processing. Starting April 16 and ending May 10, workshops 2-5 cover deep learning and neural networks using the Python Keras package and TensorFlow. Topics covered will include the model building, training, optimization and performance measures, and the two principal types of neural network: convolutional and recurrent. Register here.

Introduction to ArcGIS

ArcGIS Online is a geographic information system (GIS) that is used to create, edit, visualize, and analyze spatial data—all in an online cloud-based system, using only your browser. In this introduction, on April 30, you’ll get an overview of its features, how to access your organization and how to connect to data sources, along with examples on how you can create and share a map. Register here.

You & Your Thesis

Are you working on your thesis? This May 9 online workshop will give an overview of techniques useful in the production and publication of Caltech electronic theses, including tips on formatting and submitting, intellectual property considerations and access, and thesis dissemination policies. Additional topics may include author identification (ORCIDs) and preservation of thesis-related research data. Register here.
