Caltech Theses: Printing & Binding

Ph.D. theses must be submitted in electronic form as part of the graduation requirements for Caltech. This guide serves as a stepping-off point for this process.

Printing

We recommend acid-free paper with a high linen content for long-term preservation of your paper copy. This is available at various office-supply stores.

Library:

  • The Library provides printing services to students with theses.
  • The cost is $.10/page for b&w, $.20/page for color.
  • Call Docuserve at x6437 for more information.

Caltech Graphic Resources:

  • This service is available to all members of the Caltech community.
  • Prices vary acording to number of pages, color or black-white, etc.
  • Call x3042 for a quote.

FedEx Kinko's:

  • There is a FedEx (old Kinko's) at 855 E. Colorado Blvd., next to the two-story Target.
  • Check their website, or call, for current prices.

Other Services

  • Library printers: each student receives a $25/quarter printing allotment. Per page printing is $.10/ page for BW, and $.$20 per page for color. Note that you cannot change the paper in the printers, however, and the paper is not the archival quality we recommend for theses.
  • Commercial services: Kinko's, Office Max, etc. Please contact them directly for price quotes.

Binding

Caltech Graphic Resources:

  • Five types of book binding offered: Hard, GBC(comb), velo, fastbind, double-loop wire.
  • Check their website, or call, for current prices (x6701).
  • Quick turn-around (2-3 days); pick-up on campus.

FedEx Kinko's:

  • Normal delivery time is 4 weeks; 1 and 2 week rush is available with extra fee

Ordering New or Extra Copies from Proquest UMI

If your thesis was sent to UMI, you will be able to place orders for new or extra hard copies. Please note that this does NOT apply to any theses deposited in CaltechTHESIS since October 2016.
